Proximal Monomeric Cu(II) on Alumina for the Selective Partial Oxidation of Methane to Methanol

Our study on the partial oxidation of methane to methanol by monomeric Cu(II) on alumina has been recently published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

This work shows that monomeric Cu(II) species supported on alumina, prepared via surface organometallic chemistry, are able to selectively convert methane to methanol. Combination of X-Ray absorption, EPR, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopies confirm that methane activation occurs on pairs of monomeric Cu(II) sites and generates CH3O surface species with > 80% electron efficiency.
